Can someone recomend the best possible soundfonts for string quartet available freely in the internet, for use with SynthFont?

Must be able to play pizzicato strings and other effects if possible. May I tag another question about Midi.
Can Sibelius 4 export all the dynamics properly when saving as a Midi file? Reason for these questions: still trying to get a realistic sound for string quartet beyond the Virtual Sound Canvas accordion-like rendition, for a netbook computer with an Atom processor. My desktop passed away at a very old age, and the financial crisis has ensured that purchase of a new one be put way down the list of priorities.
I am actually getting quite desperate about this. Jordi -- Jordi Vives i Batlle Sibelius 4.1, Asus EEE PC 1000H with Windows XP, Intel Atom 1.8 GHz, 1 GB RAM, Roland SK-88 pro. Ah, that wasn't what I meant! I bought a 1990's SC-88 (pro) a year ago (and those vintage midi modules are still popular among enthusiasts - they are listed at 200-400 dollars on Ebay, which wasn't where I got mine), and can use it for playing back both sib scores and midi files, or playing with a master keyboard. I was suggesting you try the string sounds in the Roland for your own pieces, either as a sound source for midi in Sibelius, or as a midi player when you record audio examples. But maybe that isn't an option in earlier versions of Sibelius? Posted by - 29 May 11:53PM.

Whille I await my Sibelius 6 upgrade, which will give me lots more possibilities, I have found a good solution for free in the internet. Step 1: Download a cool piece of software called SynthFont Step 2: Download the Sinfonia v3.6 soundfont orchestral compilation for classical music. Step 3: Decompress the Sinfonia files using WinRar and stick the big.sf2 file into the SynthFont directory Step 4: Save Sibelius piece as MIDI file and import into Synthfont, selecting the Sinfonia fonts for the four instruments It plays a decent quartet sound, a lot better than the virtual Sound Canvas, and it can save directly as a.wav file ready to burn on CD. Sound is not so good as Sibelius Sounds Essentials, but it is a major improvement on what i had before. Maria: I understand now what you suggested; but it doesn't work in Sib 4. Anyway, I have a better solution now (until Sib 6 arrives).

There are many ways, more methods available than the out-of-the-box solutions sold by music tech shops. During the years when I used Sibelius 4 on a Windows system (with some sort of Creative Soundblaster sound card in it, which may be the difference!), the playback of the scores was always done through free soundfonts (a free version of the Merlin package plus a good free piano sound) installed in a piece of open source sound managing software (kX Project Audio Driver). No need for the workaround you describe, with 'save as midi', etc. This mp3 of a string quartet piece was made in Sib 4 on a Win XP system, and sounds almost like what I can hear when I listen to the score file of this piece through Sibelius 4 playback on a Mac with the same soundfont as midi source (in DLS): Posted by - 30 May 09:13AM (edited 30 May 09:15AM). Maria Thank you very much! I will import the merlin soundfonts into 'my system' to get close to what you've got. I have also downloaded a piece of software called 'sfz' in the hope I will be able to plug it into sibelius directly.
